Icons

July 31, 2021

1301 Cabrillo Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90291

Huma House is pleased to present its third major exhibition in a one day pop up event - Icons - which explores the work made by artists inside California prisons, artists who were formerly incarcerated and non incarcerated artists who are concerned about the effects of imprisonment. Highlighting 9 artists: Fabian Debora, Kenneth Webb, Jack Morris, Katya McCulloch, Jason Perry, Gary Harrell, Samuel Marquez , Leopoldo Zaragoza, and Henry Frank.

The show will be in Venice, right off of Abbot Kinney, in the garage gallery and garden of the California artist yonmeister. We invite you to enjoy complimentary appetizers in the garden made by Homegirl Cafe, followed by a special Artists Panel at 5:30pm. The artist panel will feature Tobias Tubbs, Jason Perry and Jack Morris, who will discuss how art was a powerful activist tool during their incarceration and the importance and symbolism of the icon. Drinks and a DJ will follow in the garage gallery until 8pm.

Icons explores the collective human urge to manifest icons in order to surpass our most difficult moments, how these icons become vessels and reflections of ourselves, and ultimately how we transcend the icons themselves to realize our true power. It is an exploration of the symbols that we gather in the collective superconsciousness. Included in this show are small paintings of Aztec warriors and gods made during the 30 years an artist spent in solitary confinement, a bust of Jesus made out of state issued soap, artworks of Native American spirit animals, and paintings reflecting what the artist Fabian Debora coined Urban Catholicism.

Icons is a statement of resilience, an activist act allowing artists to take back their narrative, and an open, free, and public invitation to all to experience the collective power of art operating at its highest level.
